He pitched for two Rice College World Series teams. He's probably best known for his 1998 mid-week matchup with the Baylor Bears and current Astro Jason Jennings. He's hanging out in Anaheim Angels camp and he's taken the time to check in with RUBPA. He's Marc Gwyn.
Hey everyone! I'm checking in from Tempe, Arizona, home of my current team the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (...of California...USA...The World). This is my second season with the Angels after being traded from the A's last spring training. And, although this is my seventh spring training, it was my first Big League invite.
Just like with the Padres camp and Bud Black (as Stansberry described) Scioscia would call on a different player each day and put them on the spot to introduce themselves (I guess Bud Black took that little trick with him). The player would then be given a project, which they would have to present in front of the team. The presentations would generally involve some sort of diagram, chart or map.
Luckily for me, not being a very outgoing person, Scioscia only called on the younger guys, and I'm not that young anymore. Unfortunately, since I have gotten back to the minor league side, I have been the oldest guy in camp (until yesterday, when more big league cuts were made).
I was sent back to minor league camp about a week ago, but I still haven't thrown any innings on the minor league side. They keep sending me over to back up for the big league club. They send guys over in case something unexpected happens, like an injury or one of the starters uses up their pitch count early. I have been back up three times, and each time I have gotten in the game.
Now with only a few days left in camp, I have been invited to join the big league club for their freeway series. For those who live anywhere but L.A., that is the series between the Dodgers and Angels. So tomorrow morning, they will fly me to L.A., where I will attend Game One and then the next morning they will fly me back to Phoenix. So I am pretty confident that I won't be involved in any minor league spring training games.
Although I have racked up more innings on the major league side than I usually get in camp at all, I already know that I won't be making the team. For those who are interested, I will be starting the season in Salt Lake (AAA) where it is absolutely frigid for baseball weather. Things have been going pretty well, so hopefully I can make the jump to the next level this year. Wish me good luck!
