He's most famous for his complete game victory in the championship game of the 2003 College World Series, bringing Rice's first ever team championship to South Main. He was also a three-time All-America and first round draft pick of the New York Mets. He's experienced life in the big leagues and he's working his way back. He'll be checking in with RUBPA all season. He's Philip Humber, aka The Shark.

It's Philip Humber back again updating you on life in pro ball. Thanks to Herce for picking up the slack for me last week. Who knew that they don't have Internet at the Hotel Elegante in Albuquerque?

I am exhausted from this past road trip. I think the extreme climate changes got to me a little bit. Going from New Orleans to Albuquerque was enough, but we decided to add a ten hour bus ride to Oklahoma City to that, followed by a 4:30 am wake up call for a flight back home.

I had a rough go of it in Okie City, giving up five earned runs in as many innings. The good thing is I am able to learn from what happened. I had all three pitches (fastball, curveball, and change-up) working as well as they ever have. On top of that, my command of them in the bullpen and early in the game was outstanding. I felt as though I was going to dominate the hitters. However, the lineup I was facing may have been the most disciplined one I have pitched against. They were able to take some really close pitches for balls and hit some of my best pitches hard. The mistake that I made was allowing that to frustrate me. I wanted to strike guys out so badly that my pitch count climbed as their patience grew. By the end of the third inning, instead of being on my way to an easy win, I had already surrendered three runs and was feeling the effects of a 35-pitch inning.

If I am to be a quality Major League starter, I must learn to overcome the emotions that take over when you throw your best pitch and it's called a ball or ends up as a base hit. The team that I faced on Friday night is as close to a big league line up as you will see in Triple A. Some of them were, in fact, former big leaguers. I am not only in the minor leagues to prepare myself physically to pitch in New York, but, probably even to a greater extent, my mental game has to improve.

Every game teaches me something new, and hopefully I won't have to repeat this same lesson again.

Until next time,

Go Owls!!!
