He's most famous for his complete game victory in the championship game of the 2003 College World Series, bringing Rice's first ever team championship to South Main. He was also a three-time All-America and first round draft pick of the New York Mets. He's experienced life in the big leagues and he's working his way back. He'll be checking in with RUBPA all season. He's Philip Humber, aka The Shark.
Hey Y’all,
What a great week for the Owls! Another Conference Tournament championship and another Regional host. The program just keeps chuggin’ along. Just keep swinging the sticks like that...not that this pitching staff needs 16 or 20 runs every game, but it sure helps.
Speaking of swinging the sticks, I'm starting to wonder why Coach Graham uses the designated hitter for guys like Kenny Baugh and me. We got a chance to go against each other on Thursday, and let's just say we both like fastballs. I'm going to have to give Kenny the edge this time because he fought off some tough pitches in his second at bat before getting a knock. I even mixed in some curveballs to try to put him away, but to no avail. I wish we had both faired a little better on the hill, although I managed to pick up a shaky 'W'. It was pretty cool having two Rice guys start a game against one another. I'm not sure if it has happened before or not. Plus, Kenny is a big reason why I came to Rice. He was one of the first guys I met on my visit, and he was personable and talked very positively about the program. I knew what a great pitcher he was and thought about asking for his autograph but held back. Some of the records he holds at Rice may never be broken. Kenny really set the standard for the pitchers that have come after him, both as a player and a person.
I'm writing this one from Omaha. After the game today, a fan said he was there in '03 when Rice won the Championship. I replied, "Get your tickets now, cause they're gonna do it again in about three weeks!"
Let's hope they prove me right.
Go Owls!
Editor’s Note: Philip and Kenny faced off on the mound and at the plate last Thursday. Kenny went 2 for 2 off Philip with 2 singles and Philip went 1 for 1 off Kenny with a single and a sacrifice bunt. Ron Swoboda, who calls the games for the New Orleans Zephyrs, accused the two former Rice standouts of throwing each other “alumni” fastballs.

| Yeah, my buddy Ron "Amazing Met" Swoboda didn't do a good job discussing the Rice connection. I had a talk with him afterwards. He even made an off the cuff comment about Coach Graham not teaching Rice pitchers how to help the catchers get runners out at second on an attempted steal. |
